How to calculate your exact age in years, months, and days
Knowing your exact age sounds simple. You were born on a certain date, and today is another date. The difference is your age. But calculating age precisely in years, months, and days requires accounting for leap years, varying month lengths, and the difference between calendar years and elapsed time.
The basic method
To calculate your age at a given date, subtract your birth date from the current date:
Years — Subtract your birth year from the current year. If your birthday has not happened yet this year, subtract one.
Months — Subtract your birth month from the current month. If the result is negative, add 12.
Days — Subtract your birth day from the current day. If the result is negative, borrow days from the previous month.
Let’s walk through an example. Birth date: June 15, 1990. Current date: March 12, 2025.
Years: 2025 - 1990 = 35. But March is before June, so your birthday has not happened yet. Your age in years is 34.
Months: March (3) - June (6) = -3. Add 12: 9 months since your last birthday.
Days: March 12 - June 15 would be negative, but since we already borrowed months, we need to count the days from your last birthday (June 15, 2024) to today. Your last birthday was June 15, 2024. From June 15 to March 12 is 8 months and some days. Using the months calculation: March (3) - June (6) + 12 = 9 months. Actually, since your last birthday, 8 full months have passed (July through February), and we are 12 days into March. So you are 34 years, 8 months, and some days old.
This is why age calculators exist. Doing it by hand is error-prone.
The leap year complication
Leap years add a day to February every four years. If you were born on February 29, your birthday only exists in leap years. In non-leap years, you typically celebrate on February 28 or March 1.
For age calculation purposes, a year is 365 days in a common year and 366 days in a leap year. When computing the exact number of days between two dates, you need to count how many February 29s have occurred in between.
Legal age calculations
Different contexts use different age calculation methods:
Contract law — Most contracts consider you to have reached an age on the day before your birthday. You are 18 years old for legal purposes at 12:01 AM on the day before your 18th birthday.
Medical age — Healthcare often uses your age in years as of the visit date. Premature babies may have their age corrected for developmental milestones.
Retirement age — Social Security and pension plans calculate your age based on your birth date and the date you apply. Partial months are usually not counted. You reach full retirement age in the month of your birthday.
School enrollment — Most school districts use a cut-off date. If your child turns 5 by September 1, they can start kindergarten that year.
Age in years only
For most situations, your age in completed years is sufficient. The formula is:
Age = Current Year - Birth Year - (1 if birthday has not occurred yet this year, else 0)
This is what we typically say when someone asks how old we are. It is simple, universally understood, and works for the vast majority of situations.
Age in days
Your exact age in days is the most precise measure. It counts every single day from your birth to today. The average year has 365.2425 days (accounting for leap years). To estimate your age in days: multiply your age in years by 365.2425 and add days since your last birthday.
A 30-year-old has lived approximately 30 × 365.2425 = 10,957 days. At 50, you have lived about 18,262 days. At 80, about 29,219 days.
Why your exact age matters
Beyond the obvious uses like filling out forms and celebrating birthdays, your exact age determines eligibility for Social Security, Medicare, pension benefits, and retirement account withdrawals. It affects insurance rates, loan terms, and legal capacity.
In medical contexts, your exact age can affect drug dosages, treatment protocols, and risk assessments. Pediatric and geriatric care use age-specific guidelines.
For personal milestones, knowing your exact age is a reminder of how much time you have and how you want to spend it.
Use the Age Calculator to find your exact age in years, months, and days. Enter your birth date and let the tool handle the leap years and month-length variations.
