How much do you need to retire?
A common rule of thumb is the 4% rule: in retirement, you can withdraw 4% of your nest egg each year (adjusting for inflation) with a high probability of not running out of money for 30 years. This means you need 25 times your desired annual retirement income in savings.
For example, if you want $4,000 per month ($48,000 per year) in retirement, you need $48,000 × 25 = $1,200,000 saved. This calculator shows your projected nest egg and whether you'll hit that target based on your current savings rate.
Factors that affect your retirement
Your retirement timeline is affected by your savings rate, investment returns, inflation, and how long you expect to live. Starting early gives you the massive advantage of compound interest. Even small increases in your monthly contribution can dramatically improve your retirement outcome over decades.
