What is net worth?
Your net worth is the difference between what you own (assets) and what you owe (liabilities). It is the single best measure of your financial health. A positive net worth means you have more assets than debts. A negative net worth means you owe more than you own.
Tracking your net worth over time is more important than the number itself. If your net worth is growing each month or year, you're building financial security. If it's shrinking, you need to increase assets or reduce debt.
How to improve your net worth
Two levers: increase assets and decrease liabilities. Increase assets by saving more, investing, and growing your income. Decrease liabilities by paying down high-interest debt. The assets-to-debt ratio shows how leveraged you are. A ratio above 1 means you have more assets than debt, which is healthy.
